5 Tips: To Exam Success

Tip 1 - Create a study schedule. Well, this may sound like a no brainer, sadly, not everyone is doing it. The key in creating a study schedule is so as to give priority to subjects that you are slightly weaker in so that you can practice the questions more. You should also never be complacent with subjects that you are confident or less worried about, allocate a period especially for them. A well prepared study schedule also allows you to have a work life balance, and more importantly helping you to understand the subject you're studying better.

Tip 2 - Use a mind map. Mind maps are very powerful tool which many refuse to believe or have yet to experience. Mind maps allow you to summarize the whole chapter or subject within a single sheet of paper. Would you rather be flipping through pages after pages of long textbooks essays or have the whole textbook sized down to 10 A4 pages? I would definitely choose the latter. Drawing mind maps enables you to digest the key concepts in the chapter and helps in linking up ideas or procedures, depending on the subject you're on. This method not only helps in saving time, but more importantly to allow you to understand it quickly when you browse through your own mind maps, for you are none the wiser.

Tip 3 - Study beforehand. Many people that I've came across are very skeptical and complacent when it comes to studying before the lecturer or professor teaches. Common replies are, "He's going to teach tomorrow, why start earlier?" or "I wouldn't have understood anything if I studied on my own." These are common excuses and I can always counter that by saying, "if you don't understand it, will it make a difference when the lecturer is teaching you the same thing you were going to read?" The importance in studying beforehand is so as to give you a general idea on what is about to be taught, to grasp the concept with the help of a mind map. By not reading up, you are equally clueless when then lecturer is going through the lesson. Remember, prior knowledge always help in your understanding.

Tip 4 - Make a list of questions. Always jot down on a separate note pad should you have any questions when going through your own revision, this is important as it serves as a constant reminder that these are the burning questions that you have to get answers to. By listing questions, you commit yourself into doing whatever it takes to get those answers you desire. You should never highlight questions on your textbook as it will confuse you when you've understood them already.

Tip 5 - Stay committed and share. The above tips can only be useful if you are committed to do them every single day. Creating a study schedule can be easy, but I cannot say the same for being committed to it. We all know how powerful distractions like Facebook, YouTube or 9gag can be. Hence, to want to do well, we must always maintain focus at our end state and vision how we want to enjoy our academic success. Now sharing, by helping fellow mates should they have any questions, allows you to realize that you might have left out some important concepts. I strongly believe that by teaching, we are learning at the same time too.
Now, these 5 empowering tips as mentioned earlier are meant to help you prepare for an examination and not to be used as a last minute guide. When you have painstakingly committed yourself to the above strategies, I can assure you that you will be well prepared for any paper you are about to take. How should we study Mathematics?
Roger Bacon, a philosopher and scientist said that, "All science requires Mathematics. The knowledge of mathematical things is almost innate in us... This is the easiest of sciences, a fact which is obvious in that no one's brain rejects it; for laymen and people who are utterly illiterate know how to count and reckon."
You should be actively involved in studying Math inside and outside the classroom or at home. Constant practice is a good way to study Math and using Math games or other fun Math activities are excellent ways of studying and learning Mathematics.
What concepts should preschoolers learn in Math?
Concepts such as counting numbers, number sequences and one-to-one association or matching are the most important concepts that preschoolers should learn in Math. What concepts should primary students learn in Math?
Primary students learn, aside from enhancing their counting numbers, number sequences and matching skills, they also need to learn the basic concepts of addition and subtraction, telling time, place values and initial skills in conversion to Roman Numerals.
What concepts should elementary students learn in Math?
Elementary students as a whole should be able to learn, aside from the basic addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, working with fractions, algebraic equations, problem solving and basic geometry.
Do I need a tutor to learn Math?
If you feel that even with the available tools both tangible and online you have not yet improved your Math skills then a tutor might be needed. Why are we afraid of Mathematics?
One probable reason why you are afraid of Math is because you started learning Math on the wrong foot. Some children in the past were taught that they have to learn Math early because they will have a hard time once they started school. The misconception brought fears to children then. Nowadays, Math activities, tips and tricks are available online and on paper and lots of games and fun activities are already available to help stimulate and promote Math skills such as board games and puzzles.
As a parent, how can I help my kids in learning Math?
The best way to help your kids learn Math is to start at home with basic Math activities like teaching them how to divide or share food among themselves or with their playmates, having them run errands for you so that they will be able to compute change as against the amount you gave and the amount they paid for or have them help you in measuring ingredients for baking a cake or muffin. As a teacher, how can I show my students that Math is not something to be feared?
Fear of Math usually start from past failures that your students have encountered and to show your students that Math is not something to be feared you will have to devise ways to explain to them the various concepts as simply as possible and as easy for them to understand. When I was in grade school we did not have Mathematics, we had Arithmetic. What is the difference between Arithmetic and Mathematics?
Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics dealing with the basics of computation such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and anything to do with positive numbers and calculations while Mathematics includes arithmetic, geometry, algebra, trigonometry and other branches that all deal with patterns and structures and the application of logic.

You can make two kinds of code:

1. A math code like this, in pdf format. You can set many of the qualities of this, including the code message and math level.
2. A symbols code like this, in pdf format.

What input must I provide?
To make a math code, you must give input on two screens. On the first screen, you must set the following:

1. the number of math codes (sections) you want to make,
2. the type of document you want (PDF or postscript), and
3. whether or not you want the last page of the document to be an answer key.

Additionally, you may also give the document a title, to appear in bold on the first page. The last set of inputs on the first screen allows you to set the defaults for each section of the second screen. For example, if you want each code in your document to use the operators "+" and "-", then you can set this on the first screen and each section in the second screen will have those set.

On the second screen you set the following for each code (or section):

1. the title for that section, to appear at the top in large letters,
2. instructions for that section, to appear under the title in italics,
3. the secret code itself, and
4. whether you want a symbol code (with no math problems) or a math code.

If a math code is chosen, you must set the following:

1. the mathematical operators to use (to use more than one, hold down the Ctrl button while clicking with your mouse),
2. the ranges for the operands (in "3 + 5 = 8" the operands are 3 and 5),
3. the problem layout (vertical means stacked, horizontal is like "3 + 5 = "),
4. (if subtraction is used) whether or not negative answers are allowed, and
5. (if division is used) whether or not fractional (non-integer) answers are allowed.

Examples

* Example of input for the first screen.

* The output file from submitting the second screen.

Ideas

* Use the section title to ask a question about a topic you are studying, and make the secret code the answer.
* Make a scavenger hunt by hiding codes around the building, and have the secret from one code lead to the next code.
* For those who can't do math yet, try the symbols codes.
* Have students make codes for each other.

Errors
The program will return an error if you specify a secret message that is too long for the number of possible answers. For example, if your secret message is "This is a really long secret" (23 characters) but you specify the "+" operator with operands from 1 to 5 and 1 to 5 (only 9 possible answers), then each character cannot have a unique answer associated with it. So, for example, the answer 4 would need to be assigned to at least two characters, making the code breaking process impossible. If you want a long secret message, then you have to provide enough possible answers by adjusting the ranges of the operands.
